The rotary components of machines like bearings and gearboxes will undergo wear and tear when they are used for years and simultaneously the noise they produce will also keep increasing. For this paper, the spindle bearing of a lathe has been selected to find out the period it is used by measuring its sound pressure level using a sound level meter. The readings are taken after muting the noise from the motor and gear box. Then an experimental setup was made with a motor having the same speed used in the lathe used for the experiment, which is coupled to a shaft having the same spindle diameter. Two new bearings of the same spindle bearing are purchased and fitted at the two ends of this shaft of the experimental setup. The motor was run and its noise level was measured using the sound level meter, after muting the motor sound. Also two damaged bearings of the same type were purchased from the old market and fitted in the experimental setup and similarly its sound pressure level was measured. The life of the bearing is obtained from the manufacturer’s catalog. Then the three sound pressure levels are interpolated and the number of hours the machine spindle bearing is used has been found out.
