Sound absorption characteristics of materials are important for acoustical researches as well as practical designs. Then, various measurement methods were proposed for sound absorption characteristics and some of them are standardized as in International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS), and so on. There are two well-known methods of laboratory measurement for absorption characteristics, the one is ”reverberation room method”, and the other is ”tube method”. However, these two conventional methods have several disadvantages respectively, moreover, are not suitable for ”in-situ” measurement. Furthermore, only insufficient amount of impedance database has been accumulated so far as to meet the necessity for constructing boundary conditions of wave-based room acoustical simulations. To break through the situation, the authors present a method utilizing ”ensemble averaging”, namely ”EA method”. There are two types of EA method. One is using two-microphone and the other is using pressure-velocity probe (Microflown PU-sensor). Herein, a general overview of EA method is described.
