Impinging jets are widely used in various propulsion and heat transfer applications. Impinging jets are useful in cleaning, heating/cooling operations as well as thrust production in case of aircrafts and rockets. High-speed impinging jets have complex flow structure and acoustic features. They span across a multitude of physical, hydrodynamic and acoustic scales. The high rate of heat, mass and momentum exchange make these flows very attractive in many applications. As a consequence of flow, they also contain other features responsible for noise emission, resulting in broadband noise, turbulent mixing noise, and Mach wave radiation at high speeds. In addition to this there are instabilities which are responsible for the production of very painful discrete tones caused by the interaction of vortical structures with the shock-cells and impingement plate. Noise, is generally an undesirable consequence causing health concerns or structural fatigue damage. Our results/study will explore the acoustic characteristics of jets impinging on flat plate. Noise generated due to the interaction of jet with impinging plate placed at different location for various flow conditions will be discussed and the apparent acoustic sources of various frequencies will be located using flow visualization technique.
