India is a country of rich Architectural Heritage. There are many ancient and medieval temple monuments that demonstrate unique soundscape qualities. There is a need to systematically investigate these temple monuments to uphold the rich heritage of India. The seminal research work of “Indian Architecture” by Percy Brown is reviewed to systematically classify Indian temple architecture potential for the soundscape research. Examples of acoustical marvels of temple architecture and soundscape heritage in India are summarised in terms of its architectural style that is Nagara, Dravida and Vesara types and typologies. Orissan temples are emphasized including evolution of Sikhara, the world famous Rathyatra of Jaganathpuri , typical components of Orissan temple, typical characteristics of Orissan temple , variation in Sikharas of different regions, geographical location etc. This work is a systematic literature review intended to learn lessons and, to form a base for further scientific studies observed in the Indian temple architecture.
