The speed of ultrasound in a homogeneous medium and is directly related to both elastic modulus and density. Changes in either the elasticity or density will affect pulse transit time through a sample of given thickness. The geotechnical specification of the rock mass requires the information on the mechanical properties of intact rock. The mechanical properties of a rock mass are affected by discontinuities of rock mass such as planes of weakness, mineralogical variation, bedding planes, cracks, flaws, joints and etc. Geomechanical properties of rock mass play a crucial role in the design of both underground and open excavation. Stability of structure depends upon design criteria & hence the evaluation of geotechnical properties is essential not only for design but also for stability point of view. Hence the present work an attempt has been made to establish the condition for p-waves and s-waves different types of sandstones with their respective lab-based geomechanical properties compressive strength, the role of density, grain size in the correlation is also been studied.
