SODAR(Sound Detection And Ranging) is a versatile instrument used for Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) studies. Society for Applied Microwave Electronic Engineering and Research(SAMEER), Mumbai has developed a FPGA based phased array SODAR system to profile the wind speed , wind direction and wind components of ABL. The intensity plot of the return signal (echogram) gives the insight to surface layer and ABL temperature inversion and other atmospheric features. This system also capable of estimating the mixing height and atmospheric stability. Some of the other estimated outputs are turbulent parameters, wind rose, joint frequency distribution and time-height plot of the winds. This paper presents the salient features of the SODAR and its outputs at different atmospheric conditions.
