There is always need for underwater communication system for various oceanographic applications. Short range, long life and low cost underwater communications systems are in growing need for dense underwater sensor network applications. Most of the oceanographic applications demand underwater communication systems operation using battery power because of their remote operating location. The volume of data to be communicated and communication distance are the major factors determining the endurance of the primary battery power and thus that of the communication system. Stand alone Communication systems for remote applications developed with less power consumption increases redeployment/maintenance interval. Major factors influencing power consumptions in transmitter and Receiver are discussed in the paper. It includes choice of modulation technique, hardware components selection, power conservation scheme, optimum coding techniques adopted, Code optimization, customized battery pack and power converters selection for efficient battery power utilization. Multicarrier modulation in the form Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is proven in radio frequency channels and attracting researchers for adopting the technique for high data rate underwater acoustic communication. OFDM based underwater acoustic communication system has been realized using TMS320C6713 DSP platform. Results of the open ocean experiment conducted in Bay of Bengal are discussed.
