Due to space constraint, it is desirable to have heat sink perform acoustic noise absorbing function as well. The combined function could be attempted using metal foams. In this study, we have developed a test set-up to characterize the thermal-acoustic performance of metal foam heat sinks. The thermal and acoustic characterizing parameters determined using the set-up are heat sink thermal resistance and acoustic insertion loss in decibels, respectively. Using the developed set-up, thermal-acoustic performance of metal foam heat sinks is compared with that of thermally well-established parallel plate heat sinks. Results from testing of aluminum stochastic open cell foam heat sink compared with aluminum parallel plate heat sink are reported.
