Flight procedures, as well as location and altitude of arrivals and departures and holding in the vicinity of airfields, can have a major impact on the noise pollution of airport residents. The determination of flight routes is made by statutory order of the Federal Supervisory Authority for Air Traffic Control. According to §32 of the Air Traffic Act, regulations on the determination of flight procedures, which are of particular importance for the protection of the population from aircraft noise, are issued in consultation with the German Environment Agency. Every year, numerous flight routes are modified or newly introduced, which in many cases have to be evaluated by the German Environment Agency with regard to their noise effects. The German Environment Agency has awarded various research projects on this topic. These concretized the legal framework and help to develop a practice-oriented assessment procedure. This paper presents the evaluation of flight procedures by the German Environment Agency in detail. It also deals with current research results.
