A main goal of recent noise control is not only to optimize sound level but also to improve product sound quality. As excavator’s noise is reduced, its sound quality (SQ) becomes a key determining product’s quality and preference. The purpose of this study is to develop sound quality index evaluating excavator’s exterior noise. To this end, 17 excavators’ noises are recorded at their maximum operating RPM and the excavators could be classified into three groups: small, medium, and large according to the displacement. The sample noises are subjectively evaluated using magnitude estimation method (MEM). Some sound quality metrics like loudness, roughness, and fluctuation strength and their partial values are applied to obtain the acoustic features of the samples. As a result, two SQ indices are suggested for small-size excavators and medium and large-sized excavators, respectively because it was difficult to find common factors that can represent acoustic characteristics of all size excavators.
