Beam Former : Time delay technique *Beena Gupta, **Ravi M Khanna *National Physical Laboratory, Dr. K.S. Krishnan Road, New Delhi **ex-National Physical Laboratory ABSTACT An 11- Channel time delay system has been designed, developed and integrated with Phased Array Acoustic Atmospheric Wind Profiler. This system is capable of electronically steering the acoustic beam . This method has many advantages over manual steering e.g. better accuracy, absence of wear and tear etc. The time delay technique is independent of change in frequency caused by Doppler shift in the received signal. The antenna beam sequentially points, first, towards zenith, turns 19° from the vertical towards north, and then 19° from the vertical towards west. This steering is achieved by generating incremental time delay Δt’s between adjacent rows or columns of the (11x11) row-column antenna. The periodic time delay is 116 µscs starting with ‘no delay ‘at the first channel, and with periodic increments for the subsequent channels. The system provides the required delay with an accuracy of 1 µsc max. Detailed working of the system will be presented.
