The European Noise Directive 2002/49/EC (END) has introduced two new instruments for urban planning and noise management: strategic noise maps and action plans. The noise maps created are helpful for the management of environmental noise. In Indian scenario, noise mapping is at a very infant stage particularly for the traffic and aircraft noise monitoring. There have been a very few studies that have focused on this issue and used it for noise abatement and control. A case study of noise mapping based on actual noise measurements of CSIR-National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi is presented. The present paper discusses the strategies and implications of noise mapping and the challenges ahead in developing accurate and precise maps in Indian scenario for noise pollution control in India.
